On Monday, February 8, 2021, Shirley Mae Cressman-Byam, loving wife and mother of four daughters passed away at the age of 80. Shirley was born on September 24, 1940 in Charleston Township to George and Gertrude (Rice) Irwin. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Warren Franklin Cressman and her parents. Shirley is survived by her husband of 35 years Nathaniel Marks Byam of Middlebury Center; four daughters, Jeanne (Scott) Eschbach of Elmira, NY, Cathy (Jim) Thornton of Elmira Heights, NY, Susan (David) Cray of Ocala, FL and Peggy (Todd) Mengee of Mansfield, PA; her grandchildren, Daniel (Jennifer) Eschbach, Laurel Eschbach, Hunter Cray, Heather Cray, Alexis (Ryan Moore) Mengel, and Katie (Joseph) Scogna and great grandchildren, Bryce, Tanner, Sophia, Hailey, Caleigh, Raelyn, and Mason. Shirley is also survived by two sisters, Geraldine Hemenway of Wellsboro, PA and Patricia (Edward) Husted of Nelson, PA; a brother-of-the-heart, John (Sandy) Snell of Wellsboro, PA; sisters-in-law Althea (Byam) Fountain of Norwich, NY, and Elaine (Byam) Riker of TN, and brother-in-law, Lawrence (Jane) Byam of Brandon, MS, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Shirley’s home was always open to her children’s friends; she is also survived by her two daughters-of-the-heart: Elaine (Hughes) Jenson and Jody (Zimmers) Bigelow.
Shirley was preceded in death by her brothers and sisters-in-law: Paul and Arline Irwin of Glendale, AZ, Hugh and Judy Irwin of Denton, MD and Donald Irwin of Wellsboro, PA; sisters-in-law, Alicia (Byam) Livingston, Nadine Byam and brothers-in-law, Everett Byam and Roy Hemenway.
Many in Wellsboro will remember Shirley for her years working at local diners or the care she gave her clients and their families as a home health aide. After retirement, Shirley loved gardening, baking, crafts and spending time with her grandchildren, rarely missing one of their ball games, dance recitals or band and chorus concerts.
Funeral Services will be held at Tussey-Mosher Funeral Home, 139 Main Street, Wellsboro, PA for the immediate family due to the current restrictions.
