Joseph Bergen Obituary

I always thought the hardest thing I would ever have to do is tell the world my Dad was gone, and honestly, I thought he was stubborn enough he would have been around for another 50 years. But all good things must come to an end, and Dad has found his Stairway to Heaven.

Now for the serious semi-factual information, JosephThomas A. Bergen was born on December 8, 1958, to Joan C. Bergen, with who he has now reunited, and Joseph Bergen. He spent the first couple decades of his life living in Philadelphia, PA, before he decided to jump in his friend’s car and move “to the hills.” He then started to make a new life living in Wellsboro, PA.

Dad has done a lot in his many decades in Wellsboro, including joining the Wellsboro Fire Department and the Wellsboro Ambulance Association. It was with the Fire Department he earned his nickname, Bear, all because of the way he busted down a front door during a structure fire. He remained an active member of both organizations and earned his lifetime membership. Dad was also very involved with the car rally, STPR, where he volunteered for the medical team for a few years. Then in 1979, he became the Medical Coordinator, where he made many lasting friendships. When he was not performing his duties as the Medical Coordinator, he was usually found at the after-parties exchanging his Medical Coordinator title for that of the party bouncer.

Dad then married my mom, his wife, Dawn, in December 1980. They had just recently celebrated their 41st wedding anniversary together. Together mom and Dad enjoyed traveling all around the world. After marrying Dawn, Dad quickly grew to appreciate and love his new in-laws. His mother-in-law, Ruth Cobb, still resides in his home, where he helped take care of her. His father-in-law Calvin Cobb, I know, has now been reunited because Dad always described him as a father and when he moved to Wellsboro, Cal helped show him how to be a man. Dad also gained a new sister and brother-in-law, Susan and Paul Gallagher, and his nephew Andy.

Together Mom and Dad had Jamie Sue, who married Nick (Nicholas Parker) and now resides in Indiana. Marion and Bryan Bergen and Eric Bergen, who is married to Trish, and all currently live in Wellsboro, PA. Many grandchildren usually could be found running around Dad’s house.

Lately, Dad could be found talking on the phone to his brother Stephen who resides in Pennsylvania, or his sister Andrea who resides on the Isle of Man with her husband Gordon (Harris) and two sons. It was also not uncommon to find Dad talking to his nieces and nephews, Shawna, who married Jeremy Wozniak, Tyler, who married Jessy Bergen, Bridget, who married Greg Grover, Glenn Shumway, and Joseph Shumway.

Dad was an amazing husband, father, brother, friend and just as he was amazing, he was also stubborn. We who knew him have been given a blessing, and his family has seen, heard, and read the outpouring of love. We, as a family, Thank You truly from the bottom of our hearts. A small family-only viewing was held on Sunday, January 9, 2022, at Tussey Mosher Funeral Home. A larger memorial service will be held later in 2022, when final arrangements can be made. This will be a true celebration of Dad, and we hope those who can make it will come. I, Jamie Sue, will be the main point of contact for this and will post more details on Facebook.
