John K. Mansfield, 60, a social work professor at Mansfield University, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2018.
Born Feb. 27, 1957, in Salina, Kan., he was the son of John C. Mansfield and Nina J. Rice.
John began his career in social work at Hospice by the Sea in Boca Raton, Fla. from 1993-94. He later became a program director at Children’s Case Management Organization in West Palm Beach, Fla. from 1995-96. In 1997, he became a professor in the social work department at the Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton.
After moving to Wellsboro, Pa. in 2001, John taught as professor in the social work department at Mansfield University, where he also served as the university’s chapter president for the faculty union, the Association of Pennsylvania State University and College Faculties (APSCUF).
John has taught at Mansfield University since 2001 and was elected as Mansfield’s APSCUF chapter president in April 2014. He served as an adviser to Mansfield’s Social Work Club and a coach for the university’s Boxing Club.
He was a 1975 graduate of Bishop Eustace Preparatory School in Pennsauken Township, N.J. John earned his bachelor’s degree in social work from Florida Atlantic University in 1993 and master’s degree in social work from Barry University in 1994. In 1997, he become a licensed clinical social worker, and in 2003 he earned his doctorate in philosophy from Barry University.
John is survived by his wife, Julie Mansfield; twin daughters, Elizabeth and Alexandria Mansfield; two step-daughters, Micaela and Meghan Weber; and parents John C. (Cynthia) Mansfield and Nina J. (Robert) Rice. He was preceded in death by his sister, Brenda K. Lewis.
Tussey-Mosher Funeral Home, Ltd., 139 Main Street, Wellsboro, will host a visitation Thursday, Jan. 25, from 5-7:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, Jan. 26, at 9:30 a.m. at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, 38 Central Ave., Wellsboro.
