Floyd Snyder Obituary

Floyd B. Snyder, 88, of Wellsboro, Pennsylvania, passed away April 28, 2023 at UPMC Wellsboro, Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hospital. He was born on February 11, 1935 in Jersey Shore, to Hazel (Campman) and Samuel Snyder. "Red," as he was known to many throughout his life, was number 12 of 13 children-7 boys and 6 girls. A few years after his birth the family moved to Wellsboro, the consequence of his father's new assignment with the New York Central Railroad.

Wellsboro was home the remainder of his life. At age 16 he proudly took a bellhop position at the Penn Wells Hotel. He enjoyed helping guests find their way. That job, and later tending bar, provided backstage views into the Laurel Festival pageant and mysterious out-of-town visitors, which some say included a movie star of the time.

In 1954 he married Mary Ellen Doane and several years later his son Kent was born. By then Floyd was employed at Borden's can manufacturing division on East Avenue. The mid-1960s found Floyd single again, so he bought the Fleming property at the corner of Cortland Street and Park Place. In 1984 he started work at the glass factory, where he remained until his retirement in 2005. Floyd was a proud member of Local 1001 of the American Flint Glass Workers Union.

When not at the factory or working around his house he was typically walking the town-to the Green, to coffee, to a friend's house-and greeting others with a smile, a wave, and some with a witty or humorous remark. As an active member of St. Peter's Catholic Church, he walked many a service as an usher.

Floyd was the last of the 13 siblings to pass. He is survived by his son Kent and wife Marti Minnich, grandson Nathan Snyder and partner Camila Montes de Oca, granddaughter Allison Strong and husband Nate Strong, and many friends, nieces, nephews, and cousins across the country.
