Donald R. Root, 80, of Wellsboro, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 17, 2018, at the Green Home in Wellsboro. He married Roberta A. (Northrop) Root, of Wellsboro, on November 7, 1960 and they shared 58 years of marriage together. He was born June 9, 1938 in Morris, the son of the late Donald O. and Nina K. (Crooks) Root.
Don was the owner and operator of Root Oil Company, Inc. for over 35 years. Prior to starting his business, he was employed by Corning Glass Works in Wellsboro. He obtained his diploma from Wellsboro High School and his associate’s degree from Bryant & Stratton College in Buffalo, NY. Don was a member of the St. Paul’s Episcopal church, the Ossea Masonic Lodge, the Coudersport Consistory and the Laurel Hill Fish & Game Club. He loved the outdoors as an avid hunter and fisherman, having fly fished many of the local streams with his own hand tied flies. He also enjoyed gardening and coaching Little League & Babe Ruth baseball. He took great pride in his grandchildren and cherished the time spent with his family. Don will also be missed for his ability to share great stories with family and friends.
Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Roberta, of Wellsboro; two sons, Todd D. (Penny) Root of Liberty and Jon T. Root of Wellsboro; six grandchildren, Kyle, Aric, Thomas, Casey, Logan, Daryl and Brent; several great grandchildren; sister, Mary Lou (William) Jackson of Florida; two nieces, Donelle and Mindi; nephew, Brett; and many dear friends.
