Charlotte Ertl Obituary

Charlotte Mary (Richter) Ertl, 90, passed away at her home, on First Month 24, 2018.  Her husband, William Elwood Ertl Jr., preceded her in death.  Charlotte was born Third Month 10, 1927 in Sao Paulo, Brazil, the daughter of the late Paul Adolf and Margaretha Ella Dorathea Loise (Bloss) Richter.

Charlotte was a member of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), was a First Day School teacher and served in the PTA, and school libraries in Bay Shore, Long Island, NY.  She was the first female yacht club Commodore on the East Coast of the United States.  After moving to Tioga County, PA she was involved in the Wellsboro Ministerium, the Mountain Laurel Quilt Guild, the Tioga County Amateur Radio Club, the Ellsworth Amateur Wireless Association of Maine, the Wellsboro Fire Auxilliary, and volunteered with Hospice at the Samaritan House.

Charlotte graduated high school in Flushing, N.Y. and pursued an archaeology degree.  She initially worked as a manager of long distance operators for AT&T.  After raising a family she reentered the workforce starting with Woolworths and working her way up to a manager of Housewares for Macy’s Bay Shore, from which she retired.

Lottie, as she was known to all, enjoyed sailing, sewing, knitting and all things crafty.  Most important to her was reaching out and helping others.  Her call sign for Amateur Radio was N3VHA, the last part of which we would often say phonetically as Very Happy Angel.

Surviving is her son, Robin Parsons Ertl of Wellsboro; grandchildren, Christopher Timothy Ertl of Leverett, MA, April Elizabeth VanDeusen of Dalton, MA and Jonathan William Ertl, of Dalton, MA; great-grandchildren, Dana Stuart Tarbox III, Natalie Sarina Tarbox, Lianna Charlotte Tarbox, and Noah William VanDeusen all of Dalton, MA; sister, Margaret Hubbard, of Tulsa, OK.  In addition to her husband, Charlotte was preceded in death by her parents, a son, Timothy Patrick Ertl, and brothers, Henrique W. Richter and Johannes Richter.

A private graveside service will take place at the convenience of the family. Memorial service at a later date to be announced.
