Stephen A. Saunders, 78, of Mansfield, a cherished husband, father, and grandfather (Umpa) entered eternal rest on Tuesday, February 17, 2026. Born September 29, 1947, in Blossburg, he was the son of late Merton W. and Theresa M. (Patt) Saunders. He was preceded in death by: his precious infant son Mark; sister: Jacqueline Gitchell (Bud); brothers: Stanley and Merton; and brother-in-law: Curt Sweely. In addition to his wife Nancy, Steve is survived by two children: Kristie L. Saunders of Mansfield, and Donavon Saunders (Catherine) of Trout Run; beloved grandchildren: Colt and Olivia Saunders; and several nieces and nephews.
Steve graduated from Mansfield High School and Corning Community College. Following graduation he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. Stephen served as a Sargent from 1967 to 1970 during the Viet Nam War and was awarded two Purple Hearts.
On January 16, 1971, Steve married the love of his life, Nancy Sweely, and together they shared 55 years of marriage. He and Nancy owned and operated Saunders Insurance in Mansfield and Steve's Beverage of Wellsboro. Steve contributed years of service to the First Citizens Community Bank board of directors. Steve and his family had a lifelong passion for Palomino Quarter Horses, raising, training, and showing at world and national championships.
As a man of many talents, Steve found joy in fly-fishing on Pine Creek, and hunting whitetails and turkeys on the farm with firearms and bows. He touched the lives of many with his profound sense of humor, kindness, and outgoing nature. He was a generous friend and possessed an uncanny ability to connect with anyone.
In keeping with Steve's wishes, his family has entrusted the Tussey-Mosher Funeral Home 139 Main Street Wellsboro, PA, and a private service will be held at a later date.
