Shirley Hyland Sable, 90, of Wellsboro, PA, formerly a resident of North Bay, NY, passed away Saturday, July 13, 2024, at UPMC Wellsboro, surrounded by her family. Shirley was born June 17, 1934, in Durhamville, NY the daughter of the late Michael Sheridan and Nellie (Drummond) Hyland. On August 28, 1954, she married the love of her life, Arthur W. Sable with whom she shared 65 years of marriage, until his passing on September 8, 2019, and raised 3 children.
Shirley was a graduate of Camden Central High School, Camden, NY, Class of 1952. She worked as a medical secretary at the Camden Family Health Center and worked as a secretary at the Griffiss Air Force Base, Rome, NY.
Shirley was a member of the Holy Child Catholic Church, Mansfield, PA. She was also a member of the Altar and Rosary Society at St. John’s/St Mary’s Catholic Church, North Bay, NY, Our Lady’s Rosary Makers, Louisville, KY, and the North Bay Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary and a past president. Shirley is survived by a daughter Michele S. Comes (Melvin Stafford) of Wellsboro, PA; sons: Thomas Arthur (Becky) Sable of Canisteo, NY, and Jonathan M. (Lara) of Taylorsville, NC; 8 grandchildren: Dustin Sable, Skylar Sable, Jeremy (Jessica) Sable, Matthew (Emily) Sable, Abigail (Caleb) Jones, Taylor (Bradley) Jones, Bryce Clark, and Kandiss Sable; 8 great-grandchildren, and a sister, Sharon Ross of Sarasota, FL. In addition to her husband and parents, Shirley was preceded in death by an infant son, Michael Sable, a brother, Michael Hyland, sisters, Rosemary Dixon, and Bonnie Sochia, and a special stepfather, Howard Haskins. She loved to pick blueberries and was able to do so last week. There will be no calling hours. A funeral mass will be Saturday July 20, 2024, at 12:00 pm in St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Verona Beach, NY with burial immediately following at St. Mary’s of The Irish Ridge Cemetery.
