Merle D. "Spike" Fice

July 3, 1933 — February 17, 2017

Merle D. “Spike” Fice, 83, of Wellsboro passed away at his residence, surrounded by his loving family on Friday, February 17, 2017.  He was the husband of Kay W. Ford, whom he married on October 3, 1959. Merle was born July 3, 1933, in Waverly, NY; the son of the late Leon and M. Josephine (Farrell) Fice.

During his life, Merle was employed at Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hospital as the laboratory Supervisor.  He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Wellsboro for 50+ years and was active in the church.  Merle was a member of the Wellsboro Men’s Chorus and the American Legion.  He enjoyed the outdoors, especially camping, fishing and hunting.  For many years he enjoyed square dancing with the Canyon Squares.  Merle was a Navy veteran, having served during the Korean War.

Surviving beside his wife, Kay, are his daughter, Melissa K. Bauman (Patrick) of Blossburg, PA; son, Nathan J. Fice, Dushore, PA; three grandchildren, Sadie A. Fice of White Oak, PA, Bridget K. Fice of Denver, CO and Jordyn K. Hazelton-Mohr (Sherry) of Blossburg, PA; step-grandson, Trevor Bauman (Elise) of Albany, NY  and step granddaughter, Leisl Moriarty (Kevin) of Lenox, MA;  great-granddaughter, Ellie Ann Hazelton-Mohr of Blossburg, PA; brother, Leon R. Fice (Mary Lou), Horseheads, NY; many nieces nephews and cousins.  In addition to his parents, Merle was preceded in death by his sister, Joanna Buckingham and his brother Graydon Fice.

A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, February 25, 2017 11:00 am at First Presbyterian Church of Wellsboro; the family will receive friends from 10-11 AM prior to the service.  If desired memorials may be made to Susquehanna Hospice, 24 Walnut St., Wellsboro, PA 16901 or First Presbyterian Church of Wellsboro, 130 Main St., Wellsboro, PA 16901.
