Gene Edward Luke

Gene Edward Luke, 93, of Wellsboro, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 13, 2026, at home surrounded by his family.

Born on November 27, 1932, in Berthold, North Dakota, Gene was the son of Charles and Ione (Jones) Luke. On June 7, 1952, he married his high school sweetheart, Nancy A. Luzena. Together they shared 72 years of marriage, building a life centered on faith, family, and friendship until Nancy's passing in 2024.

Gene earned a master's degree from Miami University of Ohio. He began a career as an engineer with Corning Glass in Greenville, Ohio and moved to Wellsboro in 1964. He later managed a local medical practice, where he worked until his retirement.

A devoted member of First Presbyterian Church of Wellsboro, Gene was active in his faith community throughout his life. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge in Ohio.

Gene was an avid woodworker who enjoyed making and fixing things in his workshop. His family and friends treasured the many handcrafted gifts he created over the years. An athlete who enjoyed coaching, Gene rarely missed an opportunity to support his children and grandchildren, faithfully attending their sporting events and continuing to follow local athletics long after they had graduated. He enjoyed golfing for many years and was a member of Tyoga Country Club.

Gene and Nancy shared a love of traveling, and spending time with family and friends. One of Gene's favorite destinations was Williamsburg, Virginia, where he enjoyed exploring its rich history and returned often through the years.

Gene is survived by two sons, Malen (Hedy) Luke of Topeka, Kansas, and Brian (Valerie) Luke of Arlington, Massachusetts; a daughter, Jill (Patrick) Maier of Wellsboro; six grandchildren, Brock (Stephanie) Luke, Matthew Luke, Kylie (Toby) Bluemel, Quinn (Riley) Gudakunst, Ian Luke, and Shea Maier (Ryan Moss); three great-grandchildren, Kellan Luke, Porter Luke, and Luna Gudakunst; and a sister, Kay Girbert.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Ione Luke; his beloved wife, Nancy; and his sister, Marilyn Neff.

Gene will be remembered for his steady presence, strong work ethic, generosity, and devotion to his family. His kindness, craftsmanship, and support touched the lives of many and will be deeply missed.

Friends and family are invited to pay tribute to Gene's life from 4:30-5:00pm Saturday September 19, 2026, at the First Presbyterian Church of Wellsboro, with a service to follow at 5:00pm in church.
