Frank Llewellyn Hastings

Frank Llewellyn Hastings, 86 of Wellsboro, died peacefully at his home in the early morning hours of Monday February 6, 2017, following a long chronic illness, with his wife at his side.

He was born June 10, 1930 (with his twin sister Betty (Hastings) Hemmingway) to Charles “Rex” and Helen Hastings, in Wellsboro.  In this same household lived his older sister Louise Odle, a long-time resident of Elkland after she was married.  Frank was the last surviving member of this family unit.

A 1948 graduate of Wellsboro High School, he also attended Mansfield State Teachers’ College.  After graduating from High School, Frank enlisted in the US Navy on June 21, 1948.  Assigned to the USS Phillippine Sea (CV-47) as an Aviation Boatswain AB2, he served during the Korean Conflict.  He was awarded a commendation ribbon for meritorious achievement…exceptional leadership…steadfast devotion to duty…exceptional leadership during sustained operations (8-5-50 through 5-25-51).  After an Honorable Discharge, Frank returned to Wellsboro in early June of 1952.

On June 27, 1953 Frank married Edna Mae Osborn, and they had two children, a son:  Michael Hastings (Kay) of Charlotte, NC, and a daughter:  Machele “Mickey” Pennell (Robert) of Wellsboro.  This family survives Frank and continues to honor the presence he has had in their lives, along with his loyal cats:  Moses and Noah.

Frank worked for Harry’s Dairy Store and Kentch’s Drug Store, but for most of his life he worked for Dresser Mfg.  Since retirement he enjoyed golfing until he was unable to continue playing, and of course maintaining his beautiful yard.

Withh is leadership skills, he was never afraid to start a new project.  He was directly involved in the building of the Family Life Center and School of Trinity Lutheran Church.  He was devoted to helping the unchurched and Christian Education.  He was a Little League coach, a Boy Scout leader, and held offices in church and community capacities.

He is survived by his wife and children, two grandsons:  Clark and Rex Hastings of Charlotte, NC, a great-granddaughter:  Emma Hastings also of Charlotte, a sister-in-law:  Mary Blackman of Lancaster, PA and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
