Elmer Holland Akerley

Elmer Holland Akerley, age 99, of Wellsboro, PA, died on Wednesday, June 20, 2018 at his family’s residence in Cumming, GA. He married Lois Cook on September 19, 1942 and they shared 68 years of marriage together prior to her passing in 2010. He was born on November 6, 1918 in West New York, NJ, a son of the late Myles H. and Ada M. (Shanklin) Akerley.

Elmer proudly served in the United States Army during World War II, much of that time was spent in Europe and Africa. After being honorably discharged from the military, he and his brother owned and operated a carpentry business by the name of Akerley Brothers Builders in New Jersey. Upon his retirement in the mid-1980s, Elmer and Lois moved to Liberty, PA and shortly after settled on Wellsboro, PA as their final home. He was a member of the United Methodist of Wellsboro for over 30 years. He was a former member of the Elks Club in New Jersey. He enjoyed fishing, camping and many other outdoor activities. Elmer was a well-respected man, described by family as a man of honor and integrity. He will also be remembered by family and friends for his great sense of humor.

He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Holland and Tina Akerley of Carson City, NV; daughter and son-in-law, Lynn and Al Sande of Cumming, GA; four grandchildren, Holly, Seth, John(Kaitlyn) and Bryan(Alyssa); four great grandchildren, Alexander, Sophia, Evelyn and Phoebe; sister-in-law, Nancy Kimble of Liberty, PA; several nieces and nephews.

Elmer was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Lois, and his siblings, Aubrey and Eleanor.

Family and friends are invited to pay their respects from 10-11am on Tuesday, June 26, 2018 at Tussey-Mosher Funeral Home, Ltd., 139 Main Street, Wellsboro, PA 16901. Elmer’s funeral service will immediately follow at 11am, with Pastor Rich Hanlon officiating. Burial will be held in Union Cemetery, Liberty.
