Claire H (Devitt) Vargas

Claire H. Vargas, 77, of Wellsboro, passed away on Wednesday, March 7, 2018 at the Green Home in Wellsboro. She married August "Gus" Vargas on October 10, 1959, sharing over 58 years of marriage together. She was born on January 25, 1941 in Brooklyn, NY, the daughter of the late John and Mary (Moran) Devitt. Claire graduated from Stella Maris High School, a private Roman Catholic school in Queens, NY. She stayed devoted to the Catholic faith throughout her life, most recently as a parishioner of St. Peter's Catholic Church in Wellsboro. Claire was employed for over 30 years as an office manager with collection agencies. Acquiring antiques, minerals, and other unique collectibles was a hobby shared by both her and her husband. She also loved all animals, especially the Chow Chow dog breed. Claire will be remembered for her caring personality and kind soul. Left to cherish her memory are, her loving husband, August "Gus" Vargas of Wellsboro; her sister, Maureen (Walter) Saranchuk of New Jersey; her sister-in-law, Hortense (Richard) Mullan of Long Island; several additional nieces, nephews, and dear friends. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the St. Peter's Catholic Church, 47 Central Ave., Wellsboro, PA 16901. Claire's memorial mass will be held Friday, April 6, 2018, 9:30 am at St. Peter's Catholic Church with Rev. David Bechtel officiating.
