Betty Niles departed her earthly home for her heavenly home on April 22, 2026. She was born on Sept. 30, 1924, the daughter of Alfred and Mildred (Goodwin) Hazelton.
Upon graduating from Wellsboro High School in 1942, she was employed as a secretary at Soldiers and Sailors Hospital, starting there the first day it opened. She later went to work as a legal secretary for George Linton, Tom Walrath, Sr., and the law firm of Spencer, Gleason and Hebe.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Leon G. Niles in 2010 and her first husband Lee E. Benson in 1960, and infant son and an infant daughter, her sister Ruth Dinnison, her step father, Thomas P Meadows, step brothers: Harvey, George, and Morgan, half-brother James, step sister Azalee Mormor, and son-in-law Carlos Cubero.
She will be lovingly missed by son Robert (Cindy) Benson of Waikoloa, Hawaii; daughter Brenda (Mike) Smith of Wellsboro; stepdaughters Linda Cubero of Littlestown; Janet McDowell of West End, N.C.; and stepson William (Sue) Niles of Wellsboro; 13 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; and several great great grandchildren.
Betty lived a very interesting and happy life. She loved her family and her many friends and enjoyed taking care of her home. She was a long-time member of the First Presbyterian Church, Wellsboro and an affiliate member of the Moorings Presbyterian Church in Naples, Florida.
A memorial service will be held, Wednesday, April 29, 2026, at 11am at the First Presbyterian Church, 130 Main St., Wellsboro, PA 16901. A private burial will be in Wellsboro Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggest memorial contributions in Betty’s name be made to First Presbyterian Church.
