Mary Wilcox Myers died February 23, 2018, at age 97. Mary was born in Wellsboro, PA, on March 21, 1920, the daughter of Lyle “Cap” and Clerice Moore Wilcox. She graduated from Wellsboro High School in 1938, and attended the University of Pittsburgh. Her happy marriage to Robert A. Myers began in September 1940, and ended 69 years later with his death in October 2009.
Through the intervening years, Mary worked at the Green Free Library, was secretary and librarian for the Wellsboro Elementary School System, and finally became an aide for youngsters with special needs in the Blast Intermediate Unit 17. For these children and others who faced challenges, she helped with the organization of Partners in Progress and its first sheltered workshop.
Mary served on the boards of the Green Free Library and the Potter-Tioga County Library System. She was a member of Wellsboro’s Friday Club and enjoyed reading and writing. In later years as her eyesight failed, she continued her interest in reading through the excellent talking book program of the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh.
Mary’s brother, Quentin L. Wilcox, who was also known as “Cap,” died in Texas in 1979. She was also preceded in death by her infant grandson, Patrick Eddy.
She is survived by four daughters and their families: Nancy (Charles) Ying of Ithaca, NY; Roberta (Robert) Eddy of Creekside, PA; Jane (Barry) Brucklacher of Mansfield, PA; Carol Myers Cacchione of Wellsboro; nine grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
Mary wished for no formal service. Burial will be in the Wellsboro Cemetery at the convenience of the family. Arrangements by Tussey-Mosher Funeral Home, Ltd. To share your fondest memories of Mary and sign her guestbook, visit www.tusseymosher.com.
