Gladys M. McElligott, 95, of Wellsboro, PA, died February 19, 2018 at Broad Acres Nursing Home. She was predeceased by her husband, Richard, in 2004. Gladys was born October 29, 1922 in Kayford, West Virginia, daughter of the late Purley and Zona (West) VanValkner.
At age 10, she moved to Wellsboro and was raised by her aunt and uncle, Jenny and Frank Derbyshire. Gladys graduated from Wellsboro High School in 1940 and married Richard McElligott, August 30, 1941. Gladys was devoted to her family and to St. Peter’s Church in Wellsboro. She was active in the Altar & Rosary Society plus was instrumental in developing St. Peter’s bi-annual rummage sales. She enjoyed playing bridge and other card games.
Gladys is survived by her son, Lawrence McElligott of Winchester, KY and her daughter, Sharren and her husband Michael Hummel of Wellsboro, PA; three grandchildren, Scott McElligott, Jessica Hummel, and Joshua Hummel; five great grandchildren, Christopher and Nicole McElligott, and Zachary, Kenzie, and Cody Hummel.
A funeral mass will be held on Wednesday, February 21, 2018, 9:30 am, at St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church, 47 Central Avenue, Wellsboro, PA 16901. Rev. David Bechtel will be officiating. Burial will take place in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Corning, NY. Contributions in Gladys’ memory may be made to St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church of Wellsboro, or a charity of your choosing.
