Eugene "Sam" Taylor Linton

Eugene “Sam” Taylor Linton, 90, of Wellsboro, passed away Tuesday, March 21, 2017 at his residence surrounded by his loving family.  He was the husband of Olga (Oswald) Linton whom he married September 4, 1948; they shared 68 years of marriage together.  About marriage, Sam said, “Forget the big things, it is the little things that count, and then the big things, will take care of themselves.”  And Olga said, ‘Don’t expect perfection all at once, because it takes time to build a lasting relationship.”

Sam was born on September 1, 1926 in Woodlawn, Maryland, the son of the late William B. and Susan A. (Rice) Linton.  He graduated from Warwick High School. Sam spent three years making drive shafts in Pottstown for $0.39 an hour.   Sam was a US Marine, who served his country from 1944-1948, during World War II.  His ship, the USS Pennsylvania, was torpedoed out from under him and he spent the last year of service in China.

 He moved to Tioga County to farm in 1954.  He farmed, had a milk-can route, worked at Dresser and also part-time at the post office.  In 1965, he landed full-time employment at Wellsboro Post Office, and in 1981 became Postmaster in Hughesville.  He retired in 1985.   Sam was a member of the Pine Creek Valley United Methodist Church; he was very active at his church and was always willing to lend a helping hand.  He loved spending time with the children.

Sam was a member of the American Legion Post #35, Hughesville, PA; American Postal Workers Union; Rotary Club of Hughesville, PA. He loved to fly fish, do woodworking, ride his motorcycle; he had a knack for hunting, fishing and sharp-shooting.

 He was prominent in setting up insurance and retirement benefits for local Postmasters Union.

Surviving in addition to his wife, Olga are his sons, Duane Linton of Vivian, LA and Daniel (Patricia) Linton of Galeton, PA; daughter, Roberta (Dean) Heggenstaller, Wellsboro, PA; grandchildren, Kelly, Amanda, Amy, Steve (Lisa), Kathy (Jason), Charity, Chaste, Anthony;  great-grandchildren, Kelie, Jason, Jacob (Jessie), Joshua (Joslyn), Justin (Christine);  great great-grandchildren, Cambrea, Charlotte, Kadence, Michael, Lylah, Aubrey, Jace;  numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Sam was preceded in death by 5 brothers, 5 sisters, and his grandson, Mark, whom was an Airman 1st Class.

Sam’s Life Celebration will be held Sunday, March 26, 2017 from 6-8 PM at Tussey-Mosher Funeral Home, 139 Main St., Wellsboro and Monday, March 27, 2017 from 10-11 AM at the funeral home; service to follow at 11:00 AM.  Burial will be in Tioga County Memorial Gardens with full military honors.
