August J. Vargas

August “Gus” J. Vargas, 79, of Wellsboro, passed away on Sunday, July 29, 2018 at the Green Home in Wellsboro. He was the husband of the late Claire H. (Devitt) Vargas, who preceded him in death on March 7, 2018. He was born August 9, 1938 in Brooklyn, NY, the son of the late August J. Sr. and Huntoz (Munoz) Vargas.

Gus grew up in Brooklyn, NY and was a self-employed handyman for most of his life. He was a veteran, having served in the United States Army. Additionally, he was a member of the St. Peter’s Catholic Church of Wellsboro, the American Legion and the Wellsboro planning committee. Gus was extremely attentive to detail and took great pride in the upkeep of his home. He and his wife, Claire, enjoyed collecting antiques, minerals and many other unique treasures during their travels together.

Gus is survived by one sister, several nieces & nephews and many dear friends. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Claire, and his parents.

A memorial mass will be held on Wednesday, August 29, 2018, 9:30 a.m., at St. Peter's Catholic Church, 38 Central Ave., Wellsboro, PA 16901. Rev.
